Make a Difference When You Volunteer at Hillcrest

There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available at Hillcrest Transitional Housing for both individuals and groups, whether you are looking for a one-time opportunity or an ongoing commitment. In addition, Hillcrest is always in need of donations from our community. Find the right opportunity for you.

In-Kind Gifts

Pantry Items: Hillcrest’s pantries are always in need of food, hygiene, and cleaning items. Download our list of client needs here.

Thrift Store Donations: Hillcrest Thrift Stores turn your new or gently used items into vital resources that benefit our families and graduates. Donations of clothing, shoes, housewares, furniture, jewelry, accessories, toys, books, and seasonal items can be dropped of at our Lenexa or Lee’s Summit thrift stores. Have a large donation? Contact us to schedule a donation pick-up.

Christmas Adoptions: During the holiday season, our community rallies around our residents to provide gifts and holiday meals. 2019 Christmas adoptions are now available! Click here for more information.

Other: Have something specific to offer? Other in-kind donations are welcomed. Contact us to see how we can put your item(s) to work for Hillcrest.

In-Person Opportunities

There are a number of volunteer opportunities available at our sites. For more information on any of these positions, contact us.

Community Garden: Hillcrest’s community garden provides thousands of pounds of fresh produce and herbs, free of cost, for Hillcrest clients each year. Produce is also available to our amazing volunteers, who give of their time and talents to sow, tend and harvest the garden. The community garden is located at 738 N. 31st Street, Kansas City, KS 66102. Join us in supporting this wonderful neighborhood asset by volunteering in the community garden today! To schedule a volunteer group, individual work day, or talk about how you can become involved in the community garden, please contact Cara at [email protected] or call the office at (913) 400-2573!

Apartment Sponsor: One of our most vital needs are faith communities and other groups to sponsor and apartment. This is an investment of both time and financial resources. When you commit to sponsor one of our resident apartments for a year, you help with the cost of maintaining the apartment, take care of cleaning and maintenance in between residents, provide a welcome meal for the resident, encourage them through the process, and more. This is a great chance to get to know our clients on a personal basis. To learn more about sponsorship, contact Cotton Sivils at (816) 682-2952.

One-on-One Volunteer Positions: Serve as a mentor for a Hillcrest resident, provide budget counseling, teach a life skills class, or provide babysitting services. Our residents need our community’s support to help them succeed!

Office Assistance: We are always in need of help in the office, including data entry, greeting guests, and other various projects.

Maintenance/Lawn Care: Have a green thumb or a knack for fixing things? Volunteer with us and help keep Hillcrest’s campuses beautiful.

Thrift Store Volunteer: Help sort donated items, stock shelves, and assist customers. Click here.
